http://www.softimage.com/products/xsi/v3/educational/student-teacher.asp

To purchase SOFTIMAGE|XSI under the Student/Teacher Program, you must be a qualified student, teacher or staff member of a recognized educational institution. You must provide proof of your academic status when placing an order. No order will be shipped until valid academic ID is received.

The Student/Teacher license is only to learn SOFTIMAGE|XSI and make some cool stuff, but cannot be used for paid work.

Upon graduation, you will have the choice to keep your student version for non-commercial use, or upgrade it to a full production license.  You'll receive a $495USD credit on the list price of the commercial license.

The Student/Teacher Program includes installation and setup support. This support is provided by Softimage Customer Service or by Born Digital for Japanese clients.

--
A qualified student is a student anywhere in the world who can confirm current enrollment in six credit hours, and who is accepted into a degree granting program.

Students should provide:

The completed Student/Teacher Program Form.

Students must also provide any two of the following items:

Dated Student ID Card
(e.g., Fall 2002)

Current Class Schedule

Original copy of your school transcript

Proof of full-time registration

Letter from school attesting to your attendance, on school letterhead
